Dr. Burnett's research focuses on the measurement and description of both
natural (uranium/thorium decay series) and artificial radionuclides in the environment. He
specializes in the development of new separation techniques to isolate
actinide elements from environmental matrices such as seawater, marine
sediments, and soils. A major area of research over the past several years
has been the use of natural radon-222 as a tracer of groundwater flow into coastal and
lake waters.
Dr. Burnett is currently Chair of an international working group on submarine groundwater discharge
sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Land-Ocean
Interaction in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) project of the International Geophysical and
Biophysical Program (IGBP). He is also a Professor of Oceanography at Florida State University
and serves as Senior Consultant for Radiochemistry at General Engineering Laboratories (Charleston, SC).
